The Transporter Device moves freight and people from one of your ships to another of your ships almost instantly, when both ships are in space and under 5km from each other. Target the ship you want you transport to, fly within 5 km and press I to bring up the target ship's menu. Scroll down with the cursor keys. If you are in range then there will be two new items in the menu, Freight Beamer and Transporter Device. Selecting Freight Beamer brings up a screen that lets you select which cargo to exchange; selecting Transporter Device transports you instantly to the other ship.
NB: Take care not to use the Transporter Device by accident while beaming freight from a recently captured ship. There is nothing more embarrassing than finding yourself in a battered, weaponless and shieldless ship and having to fly back in your space suit!
