If you are interested in this, you might want to check out a signed script called the Trade Command Software Mk3. A version of it is built into the game, but there is an improved version with a "Universe Trader" command available for download from the EGOSOFT Downloads page. You need to have registered your game to get access to this download.
This ship upgrade allows you to create independent traders that do the trading process automatically. The upgrade is purchasable in a select few Equipment Docks for a hefty price. See this forum topic for more information.
